As one might expect, Irish women weren't spending their time engaged in frivolous matters -- like a lot of modern Royals (male and female).

The Marys were women of accomplishment. They make me proud to be an Irish gal myself.

As for poor Mary Ward, she was proof that "a woman's work is never done." She must have been wonderwoman -- pursuing her scientific interests while bearing and caring for eleven(!) kids and a deadbeat husband. My late grandmother, in her well meaning but overly blunt way, would have said that maybe Mary was better off as a result of the accident.

Take Care and Keep Writing,

Linda

p.s. I cracked up reading your sentence: "[H]enry made a disastrous career choice: he chose not to have one." That was priceless. Sounds a bit like Beatrix Potter crossed with Vanity Fair -- sad but not atypical. Your time in the library there was certainly not wasted!

So well done, in fact, that I'll forgive the unsupported "great" in your coda. Fanboy enthusiasm is what produces such wonderful ephemera, after all!Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16807727819590358834noreply@blogger.com
